TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO’S PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE TO THE OAS
PRESENTS CREDENTIALS TO OAS SECRETARY GENERAL

Washington DC: Trinidad and Tobago’s Ninth Permanent Representative to the Organization of American States (OAS), Her Excellency Glenda Morean-Phillip, SC, presented her credentials this morning at the OAS Headquarters in Washington DC.

In presenting her credentials to the Secretary General of the OAS, José Miguel Insulza, Mrs. Morean-Phillip stated: “It is indeed an honour and privilege to serve my country in this organization which is the premier hemispheric forum.” Mrs. Morean-Phillip also gave assurance to the Secretary General that she looks forward to working with Members of the OAS and is certain that she would have “quite a fruitful and rewarding term in office.”

In welcoming Permanent Representative Morean-Phillip to the OAS, Secretary General Insulza emphasized that “Trinidad and Tobago was the first CARICOM country to become a member of the OAS and it is fitting that as the OAS celebrates its 60th Anniversary, today, I am welcoming the Ninth Representative of Trinidad and Tobago to the OAS.” The Secretary General also lauded Prime Minister of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, Honourable Patrick Manning for the rapid development of Trinidad and Tobago and commended the Government of Trinidad and Tobago for hosting two major international summits in 2009 – the Fifth Summit of the Americas and the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting. According to the Secretary General – “The progress of Trinidad and Tobago is encouraging not just for the nation, but also for the region.”

Her Excellency, Mrs. Glenda Morean-Phillip, Senior Counsel, has the distinction of being the first Trinidad-born woman in her country to qualify as a Solicitor. Before assuming the position of Permanent Representative of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago to the OAS, Mrs. Morean-Phillip served Trinidad and Tobago as High Commissioner of Trinidad and Tobago to London.

Several members of the diplomatic core and officials of the OAS, as well as diplomatic staff of the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago to the OAS attended the Presentation of Credentials Ceremony this morning, including, Assistant Secretary General of the OAS, Ambassador Albert Ramdin; Chairman of the Permanent Council of the OAS, Ambassador Michael I. King; Permanent Representative of Canada to the OAS, Ambassador Graeme C. Clark; Deputy Chief of Mission of Bahamas, Ms. Rhoda Jackson; and Deputy Chief of Mission of Trinidad and Tobago, Dr. Paul Byam.
