Message to the Nation from The Honourable
Patrick Manning Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago
on the Celebration Of Easter 2009
The celebration of Easter contains the core message of Christianity. Jesus, the son of God, gave his life for the sins of humanity, was crucified and rose again in triumph, pointing the way to eternal life and reinforcing the divinity of his mission on earth. This is a seminal experience in the history of mankind and is unsurpassed in the influence it has exercised in shaping civilization.
The message of Easter continues to be of great relevance to Christians all over the world. It is the promise of heavenly reward based on our life during our earthly soujourn. This belief of Jesus Christ as the redeemer has had a profound influence on the lives of a very significant percentage of our own citizens for generations; and has contributed immeasurably to strengthening the fabric of the society that we have been building in Trinidad and Tobago.
Indeed there is a striking similarity in the fundamental teachings of all major religions, existing harmoniously in our country. We are enjoined by all faiths in our efforts to intensify our relationship with the Almighty, to love our fellow man and to do good works for the benefit of others, to be our brother’s keeper if we are to reap the rewards in the life hereafter. The vast majority of our people has always adhered to these basic principles of a sound and constructive life, underscoring the very significant role that religion has played in the development of Trinidad and Tobago.
Therefore at this time let us give thanks to Almighty God for his many blessings. Let us be grateful for the unity of our diverse society; for the democracy and fundamental freedoms that we enjoy; and for the opportunity to progress and develop our talents. Most importantly, let us give praise for the very great illumination that the life and teachings of Jesus Christ continues to provide; and let us intensify our resolve to please Almighty God in all that we do. In this most important event in the Christian calendar, let us all, each one of us, be resolved to do a good deed, be more considerate, give charity, not only to enrich our own lives but truly to assist someone else, whoever that person in need may be.
On behalf of the Government, of Trinidad and Tobago I extend Easter greetings to all and may Almighty God bless our nation.
